A Brief Note On Bribery And Corruption Of The Public Sector

Analysis on bribery and corruption in the public sector Introduction There is one statement that â€Å"Bribery and corruption in the public sector, is endemic and unavoidable in all societies†. This essay will make critical analysis of this statement, targeting the public sector. Especially taking the example of US and UK regulatory framework, it will make clear understanding of this statement. Through current academic literature by comparing, contrasting and critiquing views, this essay will develop a critical understanding of the high possibility of bribery and corruption. Current situation Considering the public departments, they are the key to provide high-efficient and high-quality service to make social progress. Financial bribery or corruption may be not prohibited, and this phenomenon will be more common (Pujas and Rhodes, 1999). In general, expenditure exceeds standard level. However, resources in the public sector are the public resources, which is applied by members of the public sector making decision how to make full use of them, and this may result in the bribery or corruption (Provan and Milward, 2001). Especially for those departments who control financial management, it may pose a threat to waste resources. Therefore, the public sector is based on its own right to receive any gift, loan, fee, reward and other advantages to do something, which is dishonest, illegal or a breach of trust in the conduct of the enterprise’s business (Kirkpatrick and Lucio, 1995).Show MoreRelatedThe Youth And Anti Corruption2508 Words   |  11 Pagesyouth on anti-corruption where these integrity camps will: A. How Bilingualism Affects Cognition And Whether Or Not The...

As time has progressed, a new era of multiculturalism has arisen and with it has come the ability (or requirement) to learn more than one language, or in other words, becoming a bilingual or multilingual individual. However, with this new trend, controversy has arisen as to how this affects performance in terms of cognitive abilities. The purpose of this essay is to find out to how bilingualism affects cognition and whether or not the effects are positive. Cognitions is the term used to describe the process of knowing, reasoning and remembering. Many researchers have set out to solve this contentious mystery. For years, it was believed that a bilingual individual meant that one was at a disadvantage when compared to their monolingual†¦show more content†¦History of Bilingual Research In the early and mid-20th century, there was a notion between researchers and the public alike that bilinguals were not equivalent in terms of cognitive abilities when compared to monolinguals. Harsh statements such as the one by Epstein (1995) said that bilingualism was a â€Å"social plague† and that it was â€Å"a hardship devoid of apparent advantage,† (Yoshioka, 1929), as cited in Hakuta Diaz (1985). The research conducted in their time concluded, â€Å"Bilingualism acted as a handicap that affected a person for their life in terms of cognitive development and intellectual advancement,† (Saer, 1940). However, it should be noted that the early studies that were conducted had many limitations. For example, whether or not the person was actually fluent in their second language was not a criterion in sample collections. In some extreme cases, the extent of one’s bilingualism was measure by where they lived, surnames, and the extremeness of the parentsâ⠂¬â„¢ foreignness. Another weakness present in the methods implemented by these early researchers was that the social and economic, or socioeconomic state of the subject was not accounted or adjusted for as observed by Mcarthy (1930). She found that the majority of the bilingual children present in these early studies were those of immigrant laborers while the monolinguals

Poetry free essay sample

Love Poem Analysis: Linda Pastan is an American poet of Jewish background. She was born in New York on May 27, 1932. Today, she lives in Potomac, Maryland with her husband Ira Pastan, an accomplished physician and researcher. She is known for writing short poems that address topics like family life, domesticity, motherhood, the female experience, aging, death, loss and the fear of loss, as well as the fragility of life and relationships. Love poem is a very simple poem yet it has a deep dimension if you read analytically. In fact she didn’t get straight to the point that she was primarily addressing which is the â€Å"love poem†. Pastan goes on to describe the form of the poem rather than going on to talk about the love itself that she wanted to write about. At the first reading, you think that she is describing the creek; however, she is in a way describing their relationship and their love. Whereas in ‘Out, out-‘the tone used is quite calming and eerie at the beginning. For example, the line ‘Under the sunset far into Vermont’ lulling the reader into a false sense of security. This suddenly changes to a tone of panic in the line ‘Don’t let him, sister! ’ Therefore the suffering here is shown to be unexpected. Frost shows that suffering is something to be afraid of in ’Out, out-‘as the boy cries ‘don’t let him cut my hand off’. The panic shown by the boy owing to the thought of losing a limb indicates that he is afraid of losing his hand, due to the suffering the loss of a limb will bring to him in the future. This is shown in ‘Disabled’ as Owen shows the effect that a loss of limb can have on both physical and mental suffering. Owen’s view of suffering can contrast with Frosts portrayal of it. In disabled it would seem that although suffering is something to be feared, the narrator has learned to live alongside it- despite how hard it is. In the line ‘ Now, he will spend a few sick years in Institutes’ Owen suggests that his disability, and the effects it will have on his life are something he has come to terms with and now lives alongside suffering without protest, realising his destiny. The zoomorphism of the buzz saw in ‘Out, out-‘ ,shown in the line ‘ the buzz saw snarled and rattled in the yard’ is the poet wanting to blame something other than the boy for the cause of the suffering. This would suggest that no one wants the blame for suffering thereby showing that suffering is bad and to be avoided. By contrast, Owen does not use much personification. This could indicate that the poet believes suffering can be blamed on just one person. In this case it was entirely the fault of his egotistical younger self trying to win the attention of ‘his Meg’. However, even though we know that he is to blame for his suffering, we also sympathise with him as the narrator himself realises and regrets his careless decisions. Frosts portrayal of suffering, however harsh, is a common occurrence- he shows this in the attitude of the relatives. He does this by showing the callous reactions of the friends and family present at the boy’s death in the line ‘and they, since they were not the one dead, turned to their affairs. ’ The fact they return so quickly to their ‘affairs’ without a period of mourning indicates that they are desensitised to such pain and suffering owing to a long exposure of it, meaning it is a common occurrence. Owen focuses more on the narrators view of suffering; by doing this the narrator appears quite self-centred in the way he only talks of his suffering and not the thousands of other killed and wounded from the war, but how he is feeling sorry for himself. The carefree attitude of the narrator when talking about his past self in ‘Disabled’ as shown in the line ‘smiling they wrote his lie’ shows that suffering can only truly be feared once you have experienced it. This is because despite the fact that he is marching to war and death, he is cheerful and not thinking of the possibility of getting wounded, because suffering is not yet something he has learnt to fear. And also the good points he has given himself for going to war, such as the ‘ jewelled hilts for daggers’ has overweighed and almost numbed him against the idea of suffering. The representation of the disabled man in past, present and future presents suffering as something that changes your life entirely. The man represented before the war as a carefree young man who dreamed of ‘jewelled hilts for daggers’, but after the war and suffering he has given up and is simply waiting for death to take him- there is nothing left to live for in his eyes. This means suffering is something that both ages you and changes your outlook on life. For even though it is only a year since he joined the army ‘Now, he is old’. However, in ‘Out, out-‘, there is only the present because there is no future for the boy as he is dead, so we cannot make a comparison here. The poet Owen uses suffering to come across as a life draining force. This is represented in the lines ‘ghastly suit of grey’ and ‘he’s lost his colour very far from here, poured it down shell-holes till the veins ran dry’. This loss of colour is a metaphor for the life and  vigour lost owing to his suffering. This is emphasised by the line ‘And leap of purple spurted from his thigh. ’, contrasting the vivid colour of his youth that drained away so that all that is left is his blank ‘grey’ colouring now. Overall, in both ‘Disabled’ and ‘Out, out-‘suffering is portrayed as one of the harsh truths of life-that you can either let it consume you and take over your life, like the narrator in ‘Disabled’ or you can move on from it like the friends and family did in ‘Out, out-‘.

BBNIque

BBNIque A Case Study by Benjamin MorrillProfessor Don JollyInternational Marketing IBUS13-353February 14, 2014Over a month ago now, I arrived in Australia and have since been exposed to numerous brand names and companies that do not exist, or at least very unfamiliar, within the United States. However, in the globalized marketplace we live in today it is rare to see new innovative products that don't already exist everywhere else in the world. The most brilliant and innovative brand I have yet to come across is Australia's BBQnique. As far as products within Barbeque and Grilling industry go, there is nothing else like a BBQnique grill available to consumers. When I first saw the grill being used by a party of about six people at a local bar, I was amazed at how genius and cool it was. It is one of those products that make you say, "Now why didn't I think of that?" The BBQnique grill is a million dollar idea and I believe this "start-up" business could potentially have tremendous success in the future.Perhaps, I could help bring the marketing skills needed by this family business to make it more than just a million dollar idea, but a reality. BBQnique was founded by Steve Zagar, a former opal miner in the Australian outback, who had a revolutionary new design for the barbeque grill. During his a time in Australian outback, his most enjoyable experiences were at mealtimes when all the miners would sit around a campfire, tell jokes and stories, and cook food on a hot plate set over the fire. Once he returned home he realized traditional Aussie barbecues were just not as fun as the barbeques he used to have out in the outback. That is when he decided to design the BBQnique grill. In the simplest of terms, it is just a circular table with a built in grill right in the center so families and friends can socialize with one another while they cook their food. The cook will not be left and it ensures that barbequing will not be a chore, but rather hours of entertainment. Howev er, some argue BBQnique has too much of a niche market and cannot compete with the cheaper prices set by competitors. I argue there are many reasons to support BBQnique could still have major success in this industry despite the issues they currently face.Founded in 2008, BBqnique is an Australian family owned company who take pride in every product they make. Despite registered designs in the US and Europe, BBQnique continues to market and sell primarily within the borders of Australia. The Barbeque and Grilling industry is very competitive and is denominated by large corporations such as Weber-Stephen Products, AB Electrolux, and Middlebury. According to IBISWorld, the grilling industry was hampered in the five years before 2013 mainly due to the recession. The recession significantly slowed demand for high-end grills, such as BBQnique, in favor for cheaper grills. However, from now until 2018 IBISWorld estimates the barbecue and grilling industry revenues will steadily increase. Considerable industry growth is expected as consumer incomes rise and private spending on home improvements also increase. According to Barbeques Galore, an Australian chain of retail stores specializing in barbecue grills and accessories, this past summer sales of barbeques had risen 20 percent from the previous summer. However, sales of international companies like United States manufactured Weber-Stephen Products are starting to dominate the Australian grill market. The Weber-Stephen Company now sells their grills in 30 different countries, and is having major success in many of these countries. These "big" businesses make it tough on small businesses like BBQnique to not only survive, but have success. According to theaustralian.com.au, a recent article published on January 14th of 2014 stated that sales of US-manufactured Weber barbeques in Australia increased an estimated 60 percent this past summer. Assuming BBQnique has the resources and capabilities to market their product internationally, I think it would in their best interest to start distributing their products in international markets. With barbequing rapidly becoming a globalized market, if BBQnique does not expand into larger markets they will not survive. BBQnique sold less than seventy units in 2012; however, they have been increasing yearly sales each year since. There are many market issues that are impacting the sales of BBQnique grills. A current trend in the Australian barbeque market is the revival of charcoal cooking being preferred by the consumers over gas and electric cooking methods. More and more people are buying grills that use traditional charcoal because they cook meat with a smoky flavor and a caramelized exterior that tastes superior to meats being cooked over gas or electric grills. Barbecue Galore's marketing manager David Campbell said quote, "We're seeing more customers who are willing to experiment. They're starting to realise the flavours and results are better with cha rcoal than gas." This market change is undoubtedly going hurt the BBQnique Company's sales. BBQnique designed their grills using gas tanks with convenience and simplicity in mind. Using the latest technology in the grilling industry, most BBQnique grills feature just one control valve, one ignitor, and one burner. Unfortunately, BBQnique may quickly learn that having the most advanced technology doesn't always pay off. In the Australian barbecue and grilling market, sometimes nothing beats the traditional ways of doing things as consumers are no longer quickly purchasing gas grills without at least considering the benefits of charcoal. However, there are many positive market characteristics within Australia that are having a direct impact on the increasing success of BBQnique. Most obviously, Australia's moderate climate allows BBQnique to sell their grills year round because there is always a demand. Also, there is a long tradition of barbecuing in Australia and is a significant pa rt of one's lifestyle to many Australians. For these reasons, consumers will be more likely to purchase high-end relatively expensive BBQnique grills in the Australian market than many other international markets. There are international markets that I believe BBQnique should focus on if they decide to expand globally. As an American consumer, I believe that BBQnique would increase revenues significantly by selling their unique grills in the United States for a variety of reasons. Barbecuing is a major aspect of the American lifestyle and the North American barbecuing industry continues to grow every year. According to the Hearth, Patio Barbecue Association, a study done in 2013 showed eighty-six percent of American households own some sort of grill. Also, gas grills continue to be the most purchased grill among American consumers. A dominating sixty-seven percent of American households that own a grill own a gas grill. That is a rise of four percent from 2012 when sixty-three perce nt of households that owned a grill was gas. This trend is great news for a company like BBQnique who only sells gas grills at the moment. Another current consumer trend in the American market is the demand for new accessories and innovative ways to make the cooking experience easy and fun. In my own personal opinion, BBQnique is the most innovative and fun idea the industry has seen in years. There is nothing like the BBQnique grill in the relatively large American marketplace and I strongly believe that consumers in America will go out of their way to purchase a one. However, there are some aspects of the American market that would not be so appealing to the BBQnique Company. Most significantly, only sixty-two percent of Americans who own grill use it year round. Much of the United States does not have a climate suitable for year round barbecuing and grilling. However, many Southern states do have a climate suitable for year round sales, so the Southern region of the United States should be focused on initially.Ultimately, America is just one of many potential international markets BBQnique should considering entering. I believe the most vital skill I can bring to this family business is my market research abilities. My ultimate goal in life is to land a market researching career somewhere because that is what I find most interesting and enjoyable. Through studying marketing research and statistical analysis, I would like to think my math and analytical skills are elite. The BBQnique company has a great product and is already successful within the Australian market in its short life. I think through proper research and methodological decision making, BBQnique can reach even more demanding markets and eventually become one of the most successful brands in the barbecue and grilling industry. Within the next year, my goal would be determine customer satisfaction with the brand, and also fully enter an international market whether it is the United States or some where else. Within the next three years, my goal would be to increase customer satisfaction by at least ten percent, increase sales by thirty percent, and increase brand awareness by fifty percent. Within the next five years, my goal would be to have BBQnique being sold in every major retailer within our market and reach five percent of the market share of the barbecue industry. Within the next fifteen years, my goal would be to have BBQnique be one of the most profitable and successful companies in the barbecue industry. In order to make my dream of working for this company and becoming a millionaire a reality, certain professional development steps need to be taken. It is important that I continue to soak in knowledge about successful marketing through obtaining my degree with high distinction. I should explore options and opportunities that will increase my skills and experience, further my education and training, expand my business network and relationships, increase communicatio n and public speaking skills, and ultimately transform myself into a marketing research superstar. I should make sure I stay up to date on market trends and be sure to stay informed on the BBQnique business. Upon graduation, I plan on contacting Steve Zagar, the founder and owner of BBQnique, and provide my services to the company. Hopefully, the rest will be history.

The Development of Art and Music Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Development of Art and Music - Assignment Example The term â€Å"classical† in Western culture refers to the two cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome which dominated Europe and large parts of Asia from their Eastern Mediterranean base. The art of this period is preserved in magnificent marble statues, mosaics such as those at Pompeii and some paintings. Human figures were favorite subjects and there is a cleanness of line and a celebration of physicality in the art of this time. Mythology was often depicted, but also ordinary citizens and famous people of the age. Not very much is known about music, except that it was a part of most dramatic performances, from plays in the theatres to spectacles with gladiators in the Coliseum. This period ends with the fall of Rome in the fifth century and then everything is rather quiet through the period known as the â€Å"Dark Ages†. The earliest evidence we have of dark ages and medieval music shows a close connection with religious activities, which is not surprising since the Church was the place where most intellectual activities and almost all reading and writing activities took place. Illustrated books show psalms and hymns, sometimes with basic musical notation, and a key innovator in this field was Pope Gregory the Great (540-604), who promoted the use of plainchant, monotone single voice or choir delivery of short uplifting texts across the increasing territories of Christianity. One of the most notable composers was Hildegard of Bingen ( 1098-1179) who wrote chants and â€Å"sequences† which were used in worship, again using voice as the main carrier of the melody but some more daring intervals than those common in the Gregorian chants. In art religious subjects dominated and the pictures of saints or Bible figures were designed to convey a narrative, for example by depicting objects which had sy mbolic significance, or which reminded the viewers, most of whom could not read, what the key elements of the story were.
